Due to a cooler-than-normal spring, Kelso Lake’s water temperature is currently between 15°C–16°C (59°F–60.8°F). We’ve been monitoring conditions closely and want to outline potential race day scenarios, so you can be prepared for Sunday.  Final decisions will be made on race morning by event staff and Triathlon Ontario officials, based on both water and air temperatures.

Potential Race-Day Scenarios:

1) Mandatory wetsuits. Water temperatures under 16C (60.8F) results in wetsuits to be mandatory in the swim.  If this is the case:

  • a duathlon option will be added to the Try-A-Tri consisting of a: 1km run, 10km bike and 2.5km run.  Try-A-Tri athletes can switch to the Try-A-Du at the solutions tent in registration.
  • Sprint athletes can switch to the duathlon at the solutions tent in registration.

*Please do not email us.  These changes must be made on race morning.

2) Shortened swim. There is a chance the distances could be shortened.

  • Try-A-Tri distance would likely be unchanged.
  • Sprint swim could be shortened to 500m.

3) Cancelled swim. Not only the water temperature is taken into consideration when assessing the swim course.  A combination of low water temperatures and low air temperatures results in a great risk of hypothermia even after the swim is completed for athletes on the bike course.  If this is the case:

  • Try-A-Tri would proceed as a 1km run, 10km bike and 2.5km run, starting at 8:30am and in the same waves you are currently assigned.
  • Sprint would convert into a duathlon, consisting of a 2km run, 30km bike, 7km run, starting in waves, which may be slightly adjusted, at 9:45am.
  • The registered triathletes and duathletes would remain separated for awards and points purposes.
  • Relay teams should prepare for the possibility of a duathlon.
  • Swim/Bike athletes should prepare for a bike only and leave directly from their assigned bike-rack at their specific wave time (which may change slightly).

Please note that if changes are needed, there will be no refunds, transfers or deferrals, as per our policies.  We apologize for the inconvenience.

With some nice recent weather, our preference would be to go ahead as scheduled, and our goal is to inform athletes to be as prepared as possible for race day.  The safety of our athletes is always our greatest priority, and these decisions are made with that in mind.
